:: About Us ::
Who are we?
OUR NAME: S.I.G.N. is an acronym for Student Interpreter Group Network.
The S.I.G.N. Club is comprised of U.C.C. Students who have knowledge of
American Sign Language and Deaf Culture.

OUR GOAL: Our goal is to raise awareness of Deaf culture and to provide
interaction between ASL students and the Deaf community.  The S.I.G.N.
Club works closely with members of the Deaf Community for various
events providing networking opportunities to increase fluency in American
Sign Language.

The ASL Deaf Studies and ASL - English Interpreting Programs at Union
County College are committed to the philosophy that ASL is the indigenous
language of Deaf people in the United States with its own unique and
complex grammatical structure and collection of literature.  Deaf people
also share a culture defined as common values, traditions, and behavioral
norms.  This linguistic and cultural group holds minority status in American
society.

Both programs offered at Union County College promotes the highest
quality interpreter education so that we may produce highly ethical and
effective interpreters to work with this cultural and linguistic minority group,
the Deaf Community.
